I loved this book. It's now up in my top 5 favorites. Told in the voices of a boy and a dog,they ring absolutely true. I hear the humble, open enthusiasm of Gabe the dog, and it feels like dog, through and through. I hear their hearts, and mine is wrenched and warmed. The boy, Tony, struggles his way out of PTSD nightmares from growing up with his mother's criminal dog fights, into the love of the dog and his great uncle. An experienced search and rescue team, Gabe and Tio teach Tony SAR skills, which they use in their job/life helping people in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, along the Pacific Crest Trail. I had to read this book for one of my education classes, and I am trying to find a way to incorporate this into lesson plans! The characters are wonderful, and the similes the boy uses are great! I love that the book is written in verse, and this would be great to reach children. Also, I love that every other chapter is written from the dogs point of view. I would definitely recommend this book!
My 10 year old daughter absolutely loved this book about a family going through hard times and how the dog was such an important part of their lives.
So much love for this book. Great story, great development, great pacing. Where are its awards?
Kind of a different format for book. I would recommend for teenagers, not for children. Graphic descriptions of sadness and loneliness. I read it before giving it to my grandson, so glad I did.
Beautifully written novel in verse about a boy who is mentally and emotionally lost, who moves to the mountains with an uncle he didn't know existed. As he feels love and belonging and healing for the first time ever, he helps find people who are physically lost and finds himself being less lost, too.
Is it a poem? Not exactly. It's short phrases run together instead of normal novelistic prose. You would never know I'm college educated reading that awful description, but I bought it to read to my 7yos and just tossed it in a pile. Not good for that. Maybe later. I'm sure someone who gets more sleep will explain it better in their review.
