Roger Zelazny's "The Courts of Chaos (The Chronicles of Amber Book 5)" presents me with a poser. As with the other books of the series, this one really can't be judged individually since it's, essentially, just one chapter in a fairly large novel (and the final chapter in the Corwin sub-series, to boot). But, unfortunately, this is the weakest book of the five. Again, it's the final book in the series and is an absolutely must-read to get some kind of closure. But:- Most of the book consists of one long hell-ride interspersed with travelogue, Corwin remembrances, and philosophizing.
- The ending is basically setting up another book.
- Corwin's creation is NEVER explored. Not in this book, and not in the ensuing Merlin sub-series of five more books.
As I noted in my review of the first book, I love this series and have read it, possibly, a dozen times over the decades. But, this book has always bothered me. It's essential for the series, though, so I'm rating it at an OK 3 stars out of 5.

Remains one of the best by Zelazny and this is probably my 8th or 9th reading of the original 5 book Amber saga.
No victory is complete or without losses. Corwin is pressed to extremes but it is the whole family that assumes victory.
A wonderful ending for a magnificent series.
Great part of this very long novel - wish they'd put them together as one book. Still stands as some of the greatest fantasy/science fiction of all time.
But I made it a Five to balance out the person who asked a stupid question and gave it a One score because the book wasn't out fast enough for them. Amazing series and we are blessed that Zelazny made it into the Digital Era (and why that One score aggravated me so much). My second favorite series of all time following The Lord of The Rings, and still as unique now as it was the first time I read it. Amazing imagination and concepts.
The conclusion of the first of the Amber series. If you have 'read' the previous four books, you'll get this one as well and you will not be disappointing. This book has some of the best action and the most detailed sword fights, balanced by some discussions of philosophy. But the primary purpose of this story is to wrap up the story laid out in the the first four books. In the end, we learn who is the subject is telling the story too and why.
Mr. Zelazny did a good job reading the story he wrote, although it is sometimes hard to distinguish which character is speaking as he reads. The sound quality on these disks are much better than they were on the 4th book of the series; with very little noise and consistent sound levels. Having heard Mr. Zelazny read part of one of his books in person, it has been somewhat eerie listening to him after his death. Few series hold together as well as these 5 books do. I will listen to these again and again.
Roger Zelazny’s Amber series was a major part of my childhood. My parents had to wait for each of the earlier novels to come out, while us kids read Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles and C.S.Lewis Narnia and of course Tolkien. Corwin the amnesiac prince of Amber, the one true world which cannot be shaped by shadow, captivated my family for years. In high school I was excited to read the Merlin series as it was released.
This review is not criticism it pure praise and idolatry. The device of amnesia allowing a character to learn the rules of a world gradually has been used over and over in later sci-fi novels especially cyberpunk (Neuromancer). Roger Zelazny is a titan of readable sci-fi, and all of his works deserve to converted to kindle so I can rebuy and review them. May his spirit endure forever in heaven. Or May he reincarnate to learn aikido and creative writing again.
I LOVE Zelazny's Amber Chronicles. they are one series I read every year.
I bought the first four books in the series
9 princes in Amber
Guns of Avalon
Sign of the Unicorn
The Hand of Oberon in kindle format two years ago
Very glad the last book in the Corwin series was released a few months ago.
now if only the family would release the Merlin series of the Amber Chronicles in format.
I enjoy walking around with over 1,000 books in my pocket. When going to Dr. Appointments or there is waiting before a meeting. I can take my phone from my pocket open a book and start flipping pages!
